After unveiling the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple slashed prices of the older iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s variants in the US. Not to be left behind, Apple India too has revised the prices of the older iPhone variants. But the “price revision” is nothing but a joke. However, these also give us an indication of iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus India price.
According to the new MRPs issued by Apple to retailers, the iPhone 5S is priced at Rs 35,000 (16GB) and Rs 40,000 (32GB). The iPhone 6 is priced at Rs 52,000 (16GB), Rs 62,000 (64GB) and iPhone 6 Plus Rs 62,000 (16GB) and Rs 72,000 (64GB).
So this means Apple has cut the MRPs by mere Rs 3,000. However, these prices issued by Apple don’t mean anything. Unlike a couple of years ago when iPhones used to sell on MRP and Apple controlled market operating prices that is not the case any more. One can easily get the iPhone 6 16GB for under Rs 45,000, for example.
In its quest to garner more market share in the country and to hit Samsung harder in the high-end space, Apple started giving retailers a freer hand on how much they can sell the iPhones for, which has resulted in price erosion. The revised prices are unlikely to have any significant impact on existing market operating prices of the older iPhones.
“These new MRP revisions mean nothing for us. These are just for Apple to maintain its books,” one prominent retailer told BGR India.
However, the revised MRPs give us a good idea of how much the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus prices in India. One thing is for certain, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus would be more expensive than the corresponding launch price of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Judging by the revised MRPs, people in the industry expect the iPhone 6s price in India to start anywhere between Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000. The price difference between variants is now expected to be Rs 10,000. So the iPhone 6s 64GB can be expected to be priced between Rs 65,000 to Rs 70,000 and the iPhone 6s 128GB between Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000.
Similarly, the iPhone 6s Plus price in India can be expected to start from Rs 65,000 to Rs 70,000 for the 16GB variant and an increment of Rs 10,000 between variants.
The good thing, however, is that the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have global LTE bands, which means units bought from the US and elsewhere will also support 4G LTE networks in India, unlike earlier.
